Mimia Reads & Talks

What the title says. I read a lot of books and then talk about them. That's it.

These Old Shades
These Old Shades - Georgette Heyer
3.5 stars (the +0.5 come from the ending)
I enjoyed this book but a little bit less than what I was expecting. I don't know if it was the setting (Heyer is much more versed in English society than French) or the couple (I was rooting for another hero for the most part of the book) or the heroine herself (who was a little too naïve for what she'd lived and for my liking) or something else. However, these flaws didn't remove much from my reading enjoyment because when I noticed I had already passed the 50% mark by far in one sitting…
Now, I'll stop writing this review so I can start Devil's Cub ASAP.

My Life Next Door
My Life Next Door - Huntley Fitzpatrick
This book started being the normal YA romance when the main character meets the boy next door (and all his family which I sure appreciated) and then it started getting more serious (drug addiction, the behind the scenes of politics and a lot more other things). I liked it, really did, even if the ending was left a little too open for my liking (I wanted to know what was Jase's family decision regarding the father's accident).
Anyways, a good read for when you want some light read but not too light. What I needed right now.

Starry Eyes
Starry Eyes - Jenn Bennett
I kind of liked this story but, at the same time, didn't like it very much I don't know. It feels like a won't-give-stars-because-I-don't-know-how-many-to-give and at the same time like a solid 3 stars read. I don't really know.

Since You've Been Gone
Since You've Been Gone - Morgan Matson
So much fun at the beginning and then it gets a little more serious but you've already started to love the characters and want to know more about them, even if it's not the same kind of fun it was at first. I thought I was going to hate the end but I didn't and so this comes close to 4.5 stars.

Dorm Room 210
Dorm Room 210 - Broken_Dream07
No plot, no grammar, no clichés, no secrets, no hate-to-love, nothing. I realised I just read a book about absolutely nothing. It’s like just random facts about the characters thrown together and then some scenes that come out of nowhere and don’t lead anywhere.
I don’t like writing just negative reviews but I can’t find a single positive thing about this book.

[I read the 2nd revised version of this story published on Wattpad and I have a question. How do you revise something and, in the end, it still has so many grammar and spelling errors that sometimes you can’t understand what’s going on?]

The Masqueraders
The Masqueraders - Georgette Heyer
I greatly enjoyed this books as I've come to expect from Georgette Heyer's books.
Thought the sibling pair was very funny and, all in all, just so very enjoyable. The idea is for sure different than the other books I've read - and I'd definitely read more about the mysterious old gentleman's plans and life in general.
However, there was a small something that made me like this book a little bit less than the others I've been reading. I can't quite put my finger on what it was but maybe the writing (as it was supposed to be more old fashioned than the others) or the fact that the siblings are refered by the right pronouns when in disguise which makes more difficult to follow who's saying or doing what or something completely different that I couldn't understand.

Friday's Child
Friday's Child - Georgette Heyer
4.5 stars

This book is a little silly and a little too dramatic to be considered serious. Which is a good thing, really, because sometimes we all need to read non-serious things (I know I do. A lot of times) and it’s either this or YA high school drama that’s not very good* - you know what I’m talking about, right? Right? - And this is much better than the latter. Not to say that not being serious means no place for reflection for there are many topics I wouldn’t mind discussing that came up in this book.

In this book we come to know an all group of friends and their stories and I’d say this is Heyer’s appeal: all the good, funny, well-enough sketched-out characters. Also the Jane Austen feel in a much more loose world, a world where we can talk about husband and wife talks, kisses and maidens talking quite freely with their beaus (which I dare say existed in Jane Austen’s society even if not much in her books).

Another thought is, in the beginning, I thought I would not like the main character. She is described in a way that makes her seem uninteresting. I was wrong, she does seem awfully innocent and at the same time stupid and I still liked her. I don’t usually like main characters all the much so there’s that.

What will I read next? My TBR/Currently Reading shelf’s say a thing but my heart calls for another Heyer. We shall see.

*Not to say all YA high school drama/romance is bad. I would recommend Elizabeth Stevens for that. Highly recommend, really.

[I think I need to work on saying what I said in a better manner, so consider this review under construction and consideration]

Allegiant
Allegiant - Veronica Roth
I liked to know more about the world and all the whys and hows we got to figure out. But the reason for the world didn't make much sense to me as well as the ending. This book last of the trilogy left me unsatisfied and with too many questions for this to be a last book...

Insurgent - Veronica Roth

It was a little weak at the middle buy the end certainly made it almost to the same height as Divergent.

Side note:
Tris and Tobias relationship makes me so mad! Let's just not talk about anything important and then be mad because we weren't aware of what was going on. But i still love you, of course

I read this in two sittings. It would have been better to read a letter a time I think. Makes you think about how you live and have lived. Good for Lent

Incites piety and is relatively easy to read. Only wish the death wasn’t so rushed (which seems to happen a lot with this author) and that the chapters were shorter.
Good introduction to Saint Francis Xavier

I wish I had known of Georgette Heyer sooner. I really liked this story and Frederica matter-of-fact way. Also really liked her description of love.
I now wish to read all of Heyer's books I can put my hands on.

This Mortal Coil
This Mortal Coil - Emily Suvada
I wanted to read this mostly because I had access to the first two books in the series and the short story for free during this month. Also because those covers and titles called me. Not so much the blurb.
All this to say I was expecting this to be okay but it was more than that (not much more than that but more than that) and it was a fast, intriguing read that now makes me want to read the next, even if not tell every single person I know about it.
On to number two I guess...

All the Appearance of Goodness
All the Appearance of Goodness - Maria Grace
As usual liked it well enough to want to keep reading not outstanding in anyway. Liked the sisters and female friends relationships as it is quite refreshing to read normal and good female relationships.
